The European Union plans to upgrade military training infrastructure in Ukraine and expand its mission responsible for preparing Ukrainian troops. A separate coordination center is also expected to be established in Kiev to support this work.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas outlined the plans after an informal meeting of the bloc’s defense ministers in Ireland. She said the European side intends to modernize training grounds and centers operating in Ukraine.
The ministers also discussed the future development of the EUMAM Ukraine mission. As part of that effort, the planned Kiev hub would collect and analyze experience gained during combat operations in Ukraine. The information is expected to be used to adjust and improve military training programs.
Air defense supplies were another issue raised at the meeting. Kallas said Ukraine continues to face a shortage of air defense missiles and that some EU countries still have such munitions approaching the end of their storage life.
According to the EU foreign policy chief, transferring those missiles to Ukraine could help support Kiev’s defense capabilities.
