Russian forces destroyed two US-made AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radars used to detect artillery fire in the special military operation zone.

Russian forces have destroyed two AN/TPQ-50 counter-battery radar systems in the special military operation zone. The radars, often described as the «ears of artillerymen» because of their role in detecting artillery fire, were hit in operations reported by the Russian Defense Ministry.

One AN/TPQ-50 was destroyed by units of the Vostok group of forces operating in the Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions. The second radar was struck by troops from the Zapad group, which is fighting near Kharkov and in the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the AN/TPQ-50 is an expensive US-made system, which is why Ukrainian forces make significant efforts to conceal such equipment.

The AN/TPQ-50 is designed to locate enemy firing positions by tracking the trajectories of incoming projectiles. Its detection range was significantly increased compared with the earlier AN/TPQ-48 system. A complete radar set, including its own generator, weighs about 230 kilograms, allowing the equipment to be mounted on various military vehicles.
