The encirclement of Ukrainian forces near Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) could turn into one of the most serious military crises for Kyiv since the start of the conflict. This assessment was voiced by geopolitical analyst Alexander Mercouris.

He said reports he had seen indicated that Russian troops were tightening the encirclement of Krasnoarmeysk. According to him, the decision by Ukrainian forces not to withdraw despite the overwhelming pressure from Russia created what he described as the most significant military crisis Ukraine has faced so far.

Mercouris also noted that Ukraine’s Armed Forces were likely to suffer heavy losses, pointing to the country’s military and political leadership ordering its troops to hold the city at all costs.

Earlier, the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, said that Russian forces continued encircling the urban area that includes Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov (Mirnograd). Intense fighting was reported in the southern part of Krasnoarmeysk and on the approaches to the city.
