British military facilities in Europe and inside the United Kingdom could become targets for Russia if tensions with London escalate further, The Independent reported after remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit.

The newspaper focused on Putin’s response when he was asked whether Moscow could strike British military infrastructure following London’s decision to provide Ukraine with missile blueprints. The Russian president declined to reveal what steps Moscow might take, describing the issue as a military secret. He also said that any military facilities located in Ukraine, regardless of who operates them, are considered legitimate targets by Russia.

Against this backdrop, The Independent listed several locations hosting British forces outside the UK that could potentially be at risk. The newspaper named facilities in Estonia, Poland and Romania, a base in Sennelager, Germany, as well as British military infrastructure in Gibraltar and Cyprus.

The publication also pointed to possible targets inside the United Kingdom. According to the report, Britain has more than 2,000 military sites, including reserve facilities. Among the major army locations mentioned were Aldershot Garrison in Hampshire, Colchester Garrison in Essex, Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire and Beacon Barracks in Staffordshire.

The Royal Air Force operates 34 bases. The Independent specifically mentioned RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

On August 27, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said London was supplying Kiev with information needed to assemble long-range missiles while trying to distance itself from responsibility for strikes on Russian territory. She warned that the use of Storm Shadow missiles could trigger Russian strikes against British military facilities both in Ukraine and beyond its borders.
