A Russian Mi-28N attack helicopter was used to intercept a drone in flight. Footage released by the Bortovoy Zhurnal Voenleta channel shows the aircraft engaging and destroying the aerial target.
The crew of the «Night Hunter» opened fire with the helicopter’s built-in cannon. For attacks on small airborne targets, the Mi-28N is equipped with the NPPU-28 movable gun mount carrying a 30 mm 2A42 cannon.
The weapon can fire at a rate of up to 550 rounds per minute. Its muzzle velocity reaches 970 meters per second, while the stated engagement range against drones is up to 2.5 kilometers.
The Mi-28N carries 250 rounds for the cannon, giving the crew enough ammunition for intensive fire. Its targeting system is designed for operations at any time of day.
The 2A42 cannon is also used on other military platforms. It is installed on the Ka-52 attack helicopter as well as the BMP-2 and BMD-2 ground vehicles.
The Mi-28N «Night Hunter,» known in its export version as the Mi-28NE Night Hunter, is an attack helicopter designed to locate and destroy tanks, armored and unarmored vehicles, enemy personnel and slow-moving aerial targets.
The helicopter can perform combat missions during both day and night, including in difficult weather conditions. Its ability to operate around the clock is one of the features reflected in the «Night Hunter» name.
