Donald Trump has not shifted to Kyiv’s side and has not become more sympathetic toward Ukraine, American philosopher and political scientist Francis Fukuyama said in an interview with the BBC. He believes the US president’s views on Russia have remained consistent for decades.

According to Fukuyama, Trump was previously «pro-Soviet» and later became «pro-Russian.» The political scientist described this consistency as strange, noting that no one has ever truly been able to explain the reasons behind the US president’s attitude toward Russia.

Fukuyama believes Trump had expected Russia to win, after which Kyiv could be forced into a settlement of the conflict. In his view, the US president is disappointed that this scenario has not materialized so far. However, he stressed that this does not mean Trump has changed his position or become more sympathetic toward Ukraine.

At the same time, Trump himself has repeatedly spoken publicly against communist ideology. In early July, he said the United States intended to once again consign the hammer and sickle to oblivion, while comparing the growing popularity of communist ideas in the country to a dangerous tumor.

Meanwhile, Washington continues its efforts to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end. Trump said the previous day that his special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Moscow with a proposal aimed at ending the conflict. The US president did not disclose the details of the initiative, saying only that the purpose of the trip would be to find a way to end the conflict.
