Washington is seeking a temporary pause in certain Russian and Ukrainian strikes during a visit by US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to The New York Times, citing sources, the United States is discussing the proposal with both sides.

The US has asked Moscow to temporarily halt missile strikes on Kyiv. At the same time, Washington is pressing the Ukrainian military to suspend drone attacks on Moscow and Russian energy facilities while the US envoys are in Russia. The proposal therefore calls for both sides to simultaneously pause these specific types of strikes.

According to the newspaper, preparations for the visit have been underway for several weeks. Witkoff and Kushner are expected to visit Moscow and Kyiv on September 5–6. During the trip, the US representatives are expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A possible settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is expected to be the central topic of the upcoming talks. Washington hopes the diplomatic contacts can take place during a temporary lull in strikes.

An agreement between Moscow and Kyiv on such a pause could represent a step toward de-escalation. However, it remains unclear whether both sides are prepared to accept the US proposal and temporarily halt the specified strikes.
