The British newspaper Daily Mail reached this conclusion, suggesting that the US president’s position could deepen concerns about Washington’s commitment to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Trump said the previous day that he knows Russian President Vladimir Putin well and does not believe that Putin intends to attack NATO countries. His remarks came as Washington is sending representatives to Moscow and Kyiv with a plan aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.

The Daily Mail believes Trump’s reluctance to condemn the Kremlin could increase skepticism among European allies, particularly as his administration seeks to maintain contacts with Moscow.

Trump expressed a similar position in 2025, when he said Russia would not attack NATO while he was president. Those remarks also drew criticism from Washington’s European allies.
