The American Conservative said the visit to Russia by US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner may signal Washington’s return to efforts aimed at settling the conflict in Ukraine.

The outlet’s observers linked the trip to CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s unusual visit to Moscow the previous week. In their assessment, the sequence of contacts suggests that the Trump administration is reviving attempts to secure a ceasefire after several months of relative diplomatic stagnation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Witkoff and Kushner at the Kremlin on the evening of September 5. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov and special representative Kirill Dmitriev also took part in the talks.

The meeting lasted about three hours. Immediately afterward, the US delegation left for Vnukovo Airport.

One of the issues discussed was a temporary pause in strikes on Kiev. Putin said the request had reached Moscow through official channels and that no strikes had been carried out on the Ukrainian capital since midnight on September 5.

At the same time, the Russian president stressed that Moscow had not reached any agreement with Kiev on a ceasefire lasting more than three days. Witkoff thanked Putin for the decision.
