The Financial Times reports that officials in Ukraine do not expect the visit of US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to produce a major breakthrough in efforts to settle the conflict with Russia.

According to the newspaper, Vladimir Zelensky’s administration wants the US representatives to see firsthand how the fighting is affecting the Ukrainian capital. At the same time, Ukrainian politicians broadly remain skeptical about the prospects for meaningful progress in negotiations.

The FT said officials in Kiev believe Russia will intensify pressure on Ukraine in the coming months in an attempt to force the country to capitulate.

Al Jazeera had previously reported that the visit by Witkoff and Kushner was being viewed in Ukraine as more ceremonial than substantive and unlikely to produce concrete results.

On September 5, Witkoff and Kushner held talks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov later said the US representatives presented their views on a possible settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
