Iranian broadcaster Press TV reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had struck a US aircraft carrier and destroyer with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also said it hit an American unmanned surface vessel after it attempted to enter a protected area of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, the two US warships were damaged and later left the combat zone amid concerns over further retaliatory action.

The IRGC said Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz and warned that any hostile move would draw a harsh response. It also said the United States should leave the region and end actions that Tehran considers unlawful.

Earlier on September 6, Iranian forces said they had struck vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz along unauthorized routes. The IRGC described those attacks as retaliation for a US Navy strike on three Iranian oil tankers.

On August 20, US President Donald Trump announced what he called an unprecedented economic isolation campaign against Iran. He said Tehran had failed to take the opportunity to reach a deal.
