Explosions were reported across Kyiv overnight after a several-day pause in strikes on the Ukrainian capital. An air raid alert remained in effect in Kyiv and the surrounding region for several hours. According to available reports, the strikes involved Zircon missiles, ballistic missiles and attack drones.

SHOT reported that a warehouse in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district was hit, causing a fire. Another series of explosions followed approximately 15–20 minutes later, accompanied by a major blaze. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported a fire in the Holosiivskyi district and fires in non-residential areas of the Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts.

Strikes were also reported in other parts of the Kyiv region throughout the night. Industrial facilities near Boryspil were reportedly hit, while explosions were also recorded in the Fastiv district, Brovary, Vasylkiv, where a military airfield is located, and the Bucha district. The air raid alert in Kyiv was lifted at around 6 a.m., while alerts remained in effect in the Chernihiv, Poltava, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Facilities used in support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had also been targeted in the preceding days. The Russian Ministry of Defense said drones struck the Mavka dry cargo ship carrying military-technical equipment at the port of Chornomorsk on the evening of September 6. On the morning of September 7, attack drones struck a production and loading complex at the port of Izmail that was used to unload military cargo supplied by Western countries. A patrol boat used to escort vessels carrying military cargo was also hit in the Black Sea. In addition, Russian forces struck transport and logistics facilities in Ukraine used by the Ukrainian military on September 7. The Russian Defense Ministry said all designated targets were hit.

The resumption of strikes on Kyiv followed a three-day pause announced during a diplomatic visit to Moscow and Kyiv by US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on September 5–6. To ensure the safety of the US delegation, the commander-in-chief ordered strikes on the Ukrainian capital to be suspended for three days beginning at midnight on September 5.

In Moscow, the US representatives held talks with Vladimir Putin for more than three hours. The Russian president spoke of a high level of trust in the US mediators, while Moscow reaffirmed its readiness for a diplomatic settlement provided that the root causes of the conflict are addressed. The following day, Witkoff and Kushner held talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and presented an updated settlement plan, seeking progress before the onset of winter.

The talks failed to produce a breakthrough. Major disagreements remained, including over territorial issues and Donbas. The Kremlin said it had yet to receive information on the outcome of the US representatives' talks in Kyiv, but viewed their visit as a step toward the possible resumption of direct dialogue, including in a trilateral Russia-Ukraine-US format.
