Russia is expected to emerge from the special military operation with significantly greater military capabilities than it had in 2022, according to a forecast by Sidkhart Kaushal, a senior research fellow at the London-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), and Sem Krenni-Evans, editor-in-chief of military technology publication Calibre Defense.

The analysts expect particularly strong growth in Russia’s precision-strike capabilities. In their report for RUSI, they said the Russian military has significantly expanded the scale, quality, quantity and integration of precision attacks since 2022.

The authors noted that Russian forces have not abandoned the large-scale use of conventional artillery. Instead, artillery has been reinforced with drones, reconnaissance-strike systems and glide munitions, creating a multi-layered structure for engaging targets.

According to the report, if Russia manages to preserve this battlefield experience after the conflict ends, it is likely to enter future wars from a considerably stronger position than it did in 2022.

The specialists also highlighted changes in the organization of combat operations. Improved target designation and closer coordination between different branches of the military have increased the Russian army’s ability to operate against a technologically equipped opponent.

The analysts also pointed to the growing number of reconnaissance specialists in the Russian military who have gained extensive practical experience in detecting and identifying small mobile targets under real combat conditions.

The RUSI report concludes that the combination of technological adaptation and changes in weapons tactics during the Ukraine conflict is shaping new approaches to modern warfare. The authors believe these developments could have a long-term impact on global security.
