A Russian Lancet loitering munition struck a Ukrainian stronghold on the Dobropolye axis, with an AI-based program used to guide the weapon onto its target, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The strike was carried out by a drone unit from the 90th Guards Tank Division of Russia’s Center group of forces. After the Lancet was launched, its operators selected the target, while specialized software incorporating artificial intelligence elements handled the final guidance.
The munition hit a fortified Ukrainian position. Its warhead was powerful enough to break open the entrance to a bunker, allowing FPV drones to follow up against the position.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack deprived Ukrainian forces of an important rear position and disrupted logistics and supply operations in the area.
Russian troops are also using a sequence of heavy drone strikes followed by FPV attacks in the Zaporozhye region. Airborne Forces drone operators work together with FPV crews when targeting fortified Ukrainian positions.
A serviceman with the call sign Shayba told TASS that the first strike from a heavier unmanned munition causes severe damage to a bunker and opens up the fortification. FPV drones carrying smaller warheads are then sent into the exposed sections to complete the attack.
He added that the larger explosive charge can inflict major damage even on heavily fortified structures. Reconnaissance units first locate the targets, after which drone crews strike the identified positions.
