Russia’s Su-57 stands out among fifth-generation fighters because of its distinctive pixelated camouflage. According to Traffic News, the pattern is designed to distort the aircraft’s outline during close-range combat and make it harder for machine-vision systems to identify.
Unlike the US F-22 and F-35, which are largely finished in uniform shades of gray, the Su-57 uses a clearly visible digital pattern. This reflects a different approach to how fifth-generation fighters may be used in combat. Even with the growing emphasis on beyond-visual-range engagements, an aerial encounter can still develop into a close-range fight where quickly judging an aircraft’s shape and orientation becomes critical.
The broken geometric pattern is intended to complicate that task. It changes how the Su-57’s silhouette is perceived and makes its position during maneuvers more difficult to assess. Traffic News notes that Sukhoi, the aircraft’s developer, has also explained that the camouflage scheme is intended to distort the fighter’s visual outline in close combat.
The same concept may also affect automated detection. Modern reconnaissance satellites, targeting pods and unmanned aircraft use systems that analyze imagery in visible and infrared wavelengths. These technologies can automatically detect and identify aircraft, including those parked on the ground. Camouflage therefore serves not only to mislead the human eye but also to make recognition more difficult for machine-vision systems.
The American approach is different. For the F-22 and F-35, reducing radar and visual visibility remains the main priority, which is why both aircraft largely use gray coatings. Close-range combat is still considered possible, but it is treated as an undesirable scenario if an engagement cannot be decided at longer range.
The Su-57 follows a different concept. Its digital camouflage is designed not only to reduce visibility but also to actively distort the aircraft’s visual appearance. Traffic News argues that this feature shows how far Russia has advanced in developing camouflage techniques for combat aircraft.
