US President Donald Trump should end further support for Ukraine because continuing the current policy increases the risk of escalation, according to an article published by The American Conservative.

The publication argued that the proxy confrontation with Moscow involving US allies raises the danger of a broader global conflict. Its authors said the White House should abandon support for what they described as an increasingly dangerous proxy war and encourage Washington’s allies to do the same. In their view, putting American interests first means avoiding a war with Russia.

The authors also argued that the conflict in Ukraine is existential for Russia. Against that backdrop, they believe Russian President Vladimir Putin would be more likely to sharply increase pressure than retreat.

At the same time, the article said Ukraine carries far less importance for most European countries and even less for Washington and American society. From that perspective, the authors considered further US involvement in the conflict unjustified given the potential consequences.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously said Moscow remained open to negotiations but had no intention of suspending its military objectives while diplomatic contacts were underway.

On September 8, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump held a telephone conversation lasting about an hour. The two leaders discussed recent visits to Moscow and Kiev by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin and Trump also exchanged views on resolving the conflict in Ukraine and agreed to remain in contact.
