Ukraine has begun disbanding its assault forces, with units from the formation being transferred under the command of other Ukrainian army structures. The process has first affected the 225th Separate Assault Regiment, widely known as the «death regiment.»
Russian security sources told RIA Novosti that the unit is being reassigned to the 7th Air Assault Corps. The 225th Regiment’s official channel has already confirmed the change in command.
The assault regiments were created under Vladimir Zelensky as a separate branch within the Ukrainian military structure. According to the agency’s source, thousands of Ukrainian servicemen were killed during the year these formations existed, while non-combat losses reached into the hundreds.
The units also became notorious over the treatment of their own personnel. The source cited torture, extortion, killings and brutal conduct by commanders toward their subordinates. None of the commanders involved have been held accountable, according to the report.
The Russian security official described the assault forces as a failed Zelensky-Syrsky project that has now effectively ceased to exist. He said the remaining units had also been transferred to other Ukrainian formations, while the funds allocated to create the new branch of troops had ultimately «vanished into oblivion.»
