The large size of Ukraine’s FP-1 drones makes them easier to detect and intercept, according to military expert and retired Captain 1st Rank Vasily Dandykin.
He said FP-1 and FP-2 drones had previously been used over distances of around 2,500 kilometers and, according to some reports, up to 3,000 kilometers. The aircraft are not jet-powered and can reach speeds of roughly 200 kilometers per hour.
Dandykin described the drones as technologically unremarkable. Their sizable airframes make them easier to spot and destroy, while the use of inexpensive materials keeps production costs relatively low. He also pointed to their guidance system, which he said can rely on Starlink and other systems.
Earlier reports suggested that Ukrainian forces may have attempted to strike a target in Novy Urengoy on September 10 using modified FP-1 drones. The city lies approximately 3,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
The FP-1, or Fire Point-1, is a Ukrainian fixed-wing strike drone produced by Fire Point. It can carry a warhead weighing up to 120 kilograms.
Development of the aircraft began in 2023, followed by serial production in 2024. The FP-1 was first shown publicly at a defense exhibition in Kiev in May 2025. Since the beginning of 2025, it has been actively used in combat, primarily as a kamikaze drone.
