Russia has developed a magnetic sensor for engineering munitions that works using the Doppler effect. The device was created by volunteers and designers from the Rubezh charitable organization.
Unlike conventional magnetic systems, the new sensor does not simply detect the presence of metal. Instead, it responds to changes in frequency. Rubezh head Sergei Guban explained that this principle allows a munition to react to the mass of an approaching object without additional actions. The device is triggered at a distance of three to five meters.
According to the organization, no information about foreign equivalents of the system has appeared in open sources so far. The full technical details of the device remain undisclosed, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.
Rubezh develops and refines engineering solutions in response to requests from the front. Its specialists receive captured enemy devices or prototypes created by servicemen, reverse-engineer them, make improvements and send finished versions for testing. If a design proves effective, partner enterprises are brought in to launch production.
In one such case, Rubezh engineers turned a makeshift magnetic sensor supplied by servicemen into a functional device.
Another early development was the Agronom radio-controlled system. Work on it began after troops requested equipment that would allow demining from a safe distance of up to 20 meters. Two versions were later produced: Agronom-1 and Agronom-2, operating at ranges of 1.5 and three kilometers respectively.
The organization also supplies higher military educational institutions free of charge under direct agreements. Deliveries include magnetic sensors, remote relays for mining and demining, mine probes and a limited number of drones.
Rubezh also runs a training course on concealing personnel and equipment from thermal-imaging systems. The program is designed to teach servicemen how to remain hidden from thermal surveillance around the clock.
The organization works with Serov Polytechnic College as well, where students build aircraft and drone models. Rubezh provides access to its network of 80 3D printers for manufacturing various components and expanding production capacity. The students are currently assembling their first single-engine drone with a lifting capacity of about 14 kilograms.
Training servicemen to use newly developed equipment is another part of the program. The approach began with an engineer in Lugansk who trained soldiers before handing over equipment sets. After completing the course, sappers received the systems and went on missions already familiar with how to operate them.
Rubezh is now focusing on supplying higher military educational institutions. The goal is for future officers to master the new range of engineering equipment before graduation and arrive at their units already prepared to use it.
