Ukrainian forces are concentrating troops, military equipment and ammunition in the area of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a representative of Russian security forces told RIA Novosti, citing operational sources.

According to her, Ukrainian Armed Forces units are arriving in the Chernobyl NPP area along with KamAZ trucks carrying large quantities of ammunition. The military vehicles are escorted by mobile fire groups, while Ukrainian militants remain behind to guard the weapons delivered to the area.

The source also reported that an electronic warfare system is being established in the area. She said information about Ukrainian military activity is indirectly corroborated by posts from local residents on social media.

Military preparations around the Chernobyl NPP have also been reported previously. In mid-August, German magazine Der Spiegel wrote that Ukrainian troops were constructing defensive fortifications and setting up checkpoints in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is located in Kyiv Region, approximately 15 kilometers from the city of Chernobyl. The April 26, 1986 accident at the plant became the largest man-made disaster in terms of the scale of damage and consequences. Radioactive contamination affected areas of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and other European countries, while nearly 8.4 million people were exposed to radiation.
