The Lyman sector has become one of the areas where Ukrainian forces are attempting to seize the initiative through a series of counterattacks. The Ukrainian command has committed significant reserves to the area in an effort to complicate the Russian advance toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.

According to available information, Ukrainian units have managed to take at least 35 square kilometers of territory in several areas near Lyman and Sviatohirsk. These gains are tactical in nature, but their objective is to threaten the flank of the Russian force advancing toward the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban area from the north and northeast. Further Ukrainian advances could theoretically threaten Russian lines of communication and force Russian troops either to adjust their tactics or retreat.

Ukraine’s remaining bridgehead on the bank of the Siverskyi Donets provides additional opportunities for counterattacks. By concentrating superior manpower in individual sectors, Ukrainian forces are attempting to identify weak points and penetrate Russian defenses.

Russian units are conducting an active defense while simultaneously counterattacking, striking advancing Ukrainian groups and attempting to constrain their operations. The key objective is to repel the Ukrainian offensive, destroy the reserves committed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and stabilize the frontline.

If this objective is achieved, Russian forces will be able to continue advancing toward Sloviansk and create conditions for a further offensive deeper into the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban area. The Lyman area therefore remains a key sector, as control over it is important both for logistics and for further advances toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
