The constant threat from Russian drones is forcing Ukrainian soldiers to remain on frontline positions for longer periods and is changing the way wounded troops receive medical care, Business Insider reported, citing members of Ukraine’s 1st Separate Medical Battalion.

Ukrainian servicemen said the line of contact has effectively turned into a continuous kill zone. Drones can accurately strike moving targets, making even short-distance movement slow and extremely dangerous.

According to Business Insider, the depth of this danger zone varies across different sectors but extends for many kilometers on both sides of the frontline. Ukrainian officials and military personnel say it continues to expand as more drones fill the battlefield.

These conditions are also changing frontline medicine. Soldiers who remain in forward positions for extended periods increasingly have to be examined and treated where they are rather than being evacuated from the battlefield.

A representative of the Ukrainian medical battalion said medical units are being forced to become more mobile and less visible. Ground-based robotic platforms are increasingly used to evacuate wounded troops, reducing the need to expose personnel along the most dangerous sections of evacuation routes.

The widespread use of drones has also deprived Ukrainian forces of what is known as the golden hour — the first 60 minutes after a soldier is wounded, considered critically important for survival.
