The Ukrainian command is reinforcing its grouping near Liman as Russian forces continue to advance in the area. Kiev is moving additional reserves to the sector in an attempt to slow the Russian push and prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
Yan Gagin, a member of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy and a participant in the special military operation, told NEWS.ru that the Liman sector is particularly important because of its position relative to the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration.
According to Gagin, the area effectively forms one side of what he described as the «cauldron» around the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration and serves as one of the approaches used by Russian troops. For this reason, he said, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to hold back the Russian advance there for as long as possible.
The Ukrainian command is therefore concentrating substantial forces near Liman. Gagin said one of Kiev’s objectives is to tie down Russian units in fighting in this sector and reduce pressure on the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk direction, where Russian troops have recently been making their most notable gains.
Russian forces continue to move forward, although the fighting remains difficult. The terrain in and around Krasny Liman complicates combat operations, while clashes in the area are becoming increasingly intense. Drones are playing a major role in the fighting, with Gagin describing the situation as a full-scale UAV battle.
