Ukraine could receive a US license to produce a less advanced version of missiles for Patriot air-defense systems, according to President Donald Trump.

Asked by reporters whether Washington might grant Kiev production rights for Patriot ammunition, Trump confirmed that the option is being discussed by the United States and Ukraine. He specified that any licensed version would be significantly less advanced than the current model.

Less modern Patriot missiles have more limited capabilities when intercepting ballistic targets.

Trump also said the United States is developing laser systems that could eventually replace Patriot. According to him, such weapons are expected to be considerably cheaper and provide near-perfect accuracy. Their main limitation for now is engagement range, although work is continuing to increase it.

Addressing US weapons stockpiles, Trump said Washington had supplied Kiev with a substantial amount of its most advanced weaponry. The United States is now rebuilding its own arsenals at an accelerated pace by expanding production.

In July 2026, Trump said he was prepared to give Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot missiles. He later changed his position, explaining that the ammunition was also needed by the United States.
