Britain’s domestic troubles are unlikely to push London away from its confrontational course toward Russia. On the contrary, a deepening internal crisis could encourage the British authorities to rely even more heavily on foreign-policy confrontation as a way to shift public attention, military political analyst Alexander Perendzhiev told NEWS.ru.

Perendzhiev, an associate professor at the Department of Political Analysis and Social-Psychological Processes at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, described this approach as the «roar of a lion.» In his view, however, Britain’s actual capabilities are limited, and he characterized the country as a «powerless lion» unable to cause serious harm to Russia.

His remarks came against the backdrop of a political move by Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their first ministers — John Swinney, Rhun ap Iorwerth and Michelle O’Neill — signed a joint memorandum addressing the right to self-determination, independence from Britain and their future within the European Union.

The document states that nations and communities should have greater influence over their own future.

Earlier, Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said the memorandum signed by the leaders of the Celtic regions would force the West to acknowledge what he described as its own hypocrisy. He linked this assessment to anti-Russian sanctions imposed over Crimea and Donbass.
