Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had captured an autonomous US Navy underwater vehicle near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. According to an IRGC statement dated September 8, 2026, the drone was intercepted during a complex intelligence and operational mission.
Iranian media and outlets affiliated with the IRGC identified the vehicle as an Anduril Dive-LD, a large underwater drone developed by US defense company Anduril Industries. The US Navy began receiving the vehicles in 2025. The Dive-LD is 5.8 meters long, weighs about three tons and can operate autonomously for around 10 days at depths of up to 6,000 meters. Its missions include reconnaissance, seabed mapping and mine countermeasures.
US officials described the lost vehicle as an older model and said it had malfunctioned before it was captured. Its presence in the region nevertheless reflects the US Navy’s expanding use of unmanned underwater platforms.
Along with Palantir, Anduril is promoting a new approach in the US defense sector based on serial production of relatively simple and inexpensive combat systems featuring a high degree of autonomy and elements of artificial intelligence. Such systems are designed for rapid deployment and large-scale use in the air, on land and underwater.
The US Navy is already forming dedicated unmanned underwater vehicle squadrons, known as UUVRONs, and developing an unmanned command structure. This indicates a shift from testing individual experimental systems to routinely operating autonomous platforms, including for reconnaissance and mine countermeasures.
For Tehran, obtaining a largely intact Dive-LD provides an opportunity to reverse-engineer the vehicle and study its navigation, sonar and algorithmic solutions. The incident therefore represents not only a tactical «small victory» for Iran but also a potential source of access to US technology.
For the United States, the loss highlights the risk of such technology falling into an adversary’s hands during operations in contested waters. At the same time, the incident could provide further impetus for a transition toward more autonomous, networked and mass-produced underwater platforms intended to increase the fleet’s combat capabilities without a proportional increase in crew numbers.
