Ukraine’s monthly number of killed and wounded has reached a record level in the conflict with Russia, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said during an address to the Sejm, according to Polish news outlet Interia Wydarzenia.

Tusk said his Ukrainian partners had informed him that the number of killed and wounded had recently reached about 27,000 per month. The Polish prime minister described the figure as a record in the saddest sense of the word.

Tusk attributed the record Ukrainian Armed Forces casualties primarily to a change in Russia’s strategy. In particular, he pointed to Russia’s successful use of jet-powered drones.

The Polish prime minister acknowledged that effectively countering this type of drone remains a serious challenge not only for Ukraine. In his assessment, few are currently capable of effectively combating such UAVs.

Russian officials have previously provided significantly higher estimates of Ukraine’s overall military losses. In December 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that, according to numerous independent estimates, Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel losses had long exceeded one million and continued to rise.

That same month, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said the Ukrainian military had lost nearly 500,000 servicemen in 2025 alone. According to him, the scale of the losses had left Kyiv unable to replenish its forces through mobilization.
