Russian forces could reach the outskirts of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration from two directions, advancing from the east and south, military expert and air defense historian Yury Knutov told NEWS.ru.

According to Knutov, the eastern push is aimed at reaching Slavyansk and Kramatorsk and securing positions along the edge of the urban area. He said such footholds would become especially important in winter, as buildings could provide cover for troops and support further movement forward. At the same time, he said it is still too early to discuss taking the entire agglomeration.

Developments near Dobropolye could have a major impact on the situation. Knutov said Ukrainian forces are conducting active offensive operations in the area and have concentrated between 12,000 and 15,000 troops there.

He also identified Liman as another key direction. Taking control of the city, he said, would help form one side of a pincer around the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration.

At the same time, an advance farther south near Dobropolye would allow Russian units to place Ukrainian supply lines under fire. Those routes are used to deliver ammunition and food and to rotate personnel.

Knutov said the immediate objective is to establish positions on the outskirts of the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk urban area before gradually pushing farther forward.
