Kiev is carrying out deliberate attacks on employees of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, their relatives and residents of Energodar, Russia’s Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said. According to him, dozens of plant workers and local residents have already been injured.

Ulyanov raised the issue at the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference. He cited the July 15 strike on a Zaporozhye NPP service vehicle as one of the most serious incidents. The attack killed the plant’s chief engineer, Alexander Yakovlev, and driver Dmitry Filippov. Rosatom had previously confirmed their deaths.

The Russian diplomat said the intensity of the attacks and provocations has continued to grow. According to Ulyanov, the nuclear plant and its satellite city of Energodar came under attack almost every day during the summer, and the strikes are continuing.

He said the targets included medical and fire-and-rescue facilities, residential buildings, shops, markets and public transport stops. Ambulances, schools and kindergartens also came under attack.

Ulyanov separately reported a strike on vehicles carrying diesel fuel for the Zaporozhye NPP. The fuel is needed to support the plant during disruptions to its external power supply. The attack left people dead and injured, he said.

Ulyanov also said unconditional political support from the West is encouraging Kiev to continue attacks that threaten nuclear security. He noted that Russia has spent four years drawing attention to what it describes as the lack of consequences for Ukrainian attacks on nuclear facilities.

The diplomat added that Russia’s calls to end the silence surrounding these attacks have so far failed to receive an adequate response.
