North Korea has unveiled a new kamikaze drone that had not previously been seen in publicly available images. The weapon was shown during Kim Jong Un’s visit to several defense industry facilities, according to KCNA.

At one of the sites, the North Korean leader inspected an assembly line producing the new strike drones. Images released by the state news agency provide the first detailed look at the aircraft’s design.

The drone uses a canard configuration, with horizontal control surfaces positioned ahead of the main wing. It is also powered by an engine driving a two-blade propeller, a configuration similar to that used on Russia’s relatively outdated Geran-2.

No photographs of the North Korean development had appeared online before the latest demonstration. Its appearance on an assembly line could indicate that Pyongyang is preparing to introduce the new weapon into service soon.

North Korea has previously displayed other types of kamikaze drones, including aircraft with two X-shaped wings resembling Russia’s Lancet.

Pyongyang has also been reported to be developing Kumsong drones that copy the US MQ-9 Reaper strike and reconnaissance drone.
