Ukraine’s steel industry has lost most of its core production capacity after a series of Russian strikes, the Financial Times reported, citing representatives of major steelmakers.

According to the report, ballistic missiles disabled three of the country’s largest steel plants in the Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk regions. Together, the facilities accounted for about 90% of Ukraine’s steel production. Plants operated by Metinvest and ArcelorMittal, including the steelworks in Krivoy Rog, are currently idle.

Aleksandr Vodoviz, head of the Metinvest CEO’s office, said Ukraine effectively no longer has a functioning steel industry.

More than 15,000 people work at the three affected plants. Vodoviz said a prolonged shutdown would have a major impact on the Ukrainian economy and reduce tax revenues.

Russian forces continue striking facilities in Ukraine that Moscow says are connected to supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Attack drones and long-range precision weapons are being used in these operations.

Overnight from September 19 to 20, Russian forces carried out another series of group strikes. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the targets included military-related facilities, logistics hubs, warehouses, port infrastructure and vessels used in support of the Ukrainian military.
