The number of people reported missing during the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine has reached 275,000, according to International Committee of the Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, as cited by Vedomosti.
Spoljaric Egger said an average of around 10,000 new missing-person cases are being recorded every month.
The overall figure has also increased because of a change in the way tracing requests have been counted since 2025. The statistics now include both preliminary and officially registered requests.
The Russian Red Cross is responsible for tracing civilians who have disappeared as a result of emergencies. After receiving a request, its restoring family links service reviews the available information and seeks additional details when necessary.
The organization works with authorities in affected territories, the human rights commissioner, emergency services, healthcare institutions and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It also provides psychological and humanitarian assistance to people seeking missing relatives.
