The United States plans to open two new military bases in Greenland, according to Reuters.

One site is Narsarsuaq in the south of the island, where the U.S. base Bluie West One operated in the 1950s. The second is Mestersvig on Greenland’s east coast, an area currently used by Denmark’s elite Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, which is responsible for guarding sparsely populated and uninhabited regions.

Reuters also recalled that U. S. President Donald Trump recently announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland. According to Trump, the arrangement gives Washington permanent rights related to the island’s security.

He also said the deal is intended to prevent countries regarded by the United States as adversaries from establishing military bases in Greenland.

The agreement itself has not yet been published. Three Reuters sources familiar with its contents said the final terms will only be settled by the time the document is signed.

The new agreement between Denmark, Greenland and the United States is expected to be signed in New York during the UN General Assembly.

At present, U.S. forces in Greenland are stationed only at the Pituffik Space Base. Washington has controlled the facility since World War II.

Reuters noted that during the Cold War, the United States operated 17 military sites in Greenland and maintained a force of more than 10,000 personnel on the island.
