An unusual incident unfolded near the US Aegis Ashore missile defense base in Redzikowo, Poland, after an unauthorized drone was detected in the area. According to Onet, Polish military personnel called the 112 emergency number rather than intercepting or shooting down the aircraft.

The outlet reported that the military followed procedures that included a duty officer from the unit contacting emergency services.

On September 22, Poland’s Defense Ministry confirmed that a drone had been detected near the US facility in Redzikowo. The ministry said the aircraft was civilian and was flying about one kilometer from the base. Military air-defense systems monitored it throughout the incident.

According to the ministry, the drone posed no threat to the base and did not approach critical infrastructure. However, its operator violated the restricted zone around the facility, where drone flights are prohibited.

The military identified the location from which the drone was being controlled and passed the information to police and other relevant services. The Defense Ministry said the aircraft remained under continuous observation and the situation was under control.

The incident followed developments near Poland’s eastern border. On September 17, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said a Russian attack had taken place in western Ukraine close to Polish territory. He said a petrol station near Yagodin, roughly four kilometers from the Polish border, had apparently been targeted.
