Active Russian offensive operations have expanded the area under Russian control in the eastern part of the Sumy Region. On September 23, Military Review reported that units of Russia’s Northern Group had taken control of about 60 square kilometers of territory in a single day. Similar figures were reported by other Russian outlets citing the advance.

The reported advance covers an area stretching almost from the border with the Kursk Region to the Maryino-Mogritsa line. According to the report, this line runs roughly 17 kilometers from the outskirts of the regional center, Sumy.

Russian troops reportedly pushed Ukrainian units out of positions southeast of Yunakovka, close to the Russian border. The area has often been referred to as the Sadki salient after the settlement of Sadki located there.

Military Review described the territorial change as the largest area to come under Russian control within a single day anywhere in the combat zone over the previous week.

A comparable advance by Russian forces had previously been reported near Dobropolye in the western part of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

On September 22, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had completed the encirclement of a major Ukrainian defensive hub in Dobropolye. The ministry attributed the operation to units of Russia’s Center Group.
