Russian forces recently carried out a mechanized assault on the Donetsk sector using T-90M tanks. According to Polish outlet Interia, the armored group managed to break through Ukrainian defensive positions despite heavy drone attacks and clear a route for lighter vehicles.

The operation involved vehicles from the 228th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment of the 90th Guards Tank Division.

Interia highlighted the performance of one T-90M that spearheaded the advance. Despite sustained Ukrainian fire, the crew reportedly pushed 12 kilometers into the battlefield. According to the commander cited by the outlet, the tank was struck by drones around 40 times during the assault.

Armor and additional anti-drone protection allowed the vehicle to remain mobile after repeated hits, but the damage gradually became severe. Observation equipment, weapon systems, fire-control components and ventilation were disabled. The tank was eventually brought to a halt, and its crew left the vehicle.

Interia used the episode to argue that drones can significantly increase firepower and disable heavy armored vehicles but are not a universal solution on the battlefield. The outlet’s assessment was that heavy armor therefore continues to be used to breach defensive lines and support advancing forces. The longer a tank, infantry fighting vehicle or armored personnel carrier remains mobile and combat-capable, the more tasks it can perform before suffering critical damage.

The publication also noted that the Russian tanks involved in the assault operated without Arena-M active protection systems. Such systems have begun appearing on Russian tanks and are designed to improve protection against guided missiles, grenades and drones.
