Russian units operating on the Dobropolye direction have begun using new Varvar interceptor drones to destroy Ukrainian UAVs, Zvezda TV reported.

The Varvar is larger than other interceptors currently in service and is designed to engage sizable airborne targets, including hexacopters. The drone can reach speeds of about 250 kilometers per hour and operates at distances of up to two kilometers.

Its onboard system incorporates artificial intelligence elements that help detect an airborne target and calculate the best approach path for interception.

Platoon commander Remir Khamidullin said the Varvar destroys its target through kinetic impact. According to him, the interceptor is used against gasoline-powered drones as well as long-range strike UAVs.

The drones are operated by units of the 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Tsentr Group of Forces on the Dobropolye direction. Air observation posts are also deployed in the area. Once a UAV is detected, vehicle movement is halted and information about the target is relayed to neighboring positions.

Ukrainian drone activity also changes depending on the time of day. Deputy platoon commander Konstantin Malkov said strike UAVs are mainly detected at night, when they attempt to bypass observation posts by flying over fields. During the daytime, Hornet drones are predominantly used to attack vehicles.
