US President Donald Trump proposed arms control talks with Russia and China during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington on September 23–25, according to White House materials released after the visit.

Trump and Xi also discussed a range of international issues, including Russia, North Korea and Iran.

The Iranian nuclear program was among the topics addressed. According to the White House, the US and Chinese leaders agreed that Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons.

Trump and Xi also opposed allowing states or organizations to impose fees on international waterways.

Washington has previously sought to involve Beijing in potential new US-Russian agreements on reducing nuclear weapons. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that effective arms control in the 21st century is impossible without taking China into account.
