Vladimir Zelensky’s ceasefire proposal may be a calculated strategic move rather than a sign of desperation, according to German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.

The publication suggests that Zelensky is counting on Moscow to reject the proposal, allowing him to strengthen his position in talks with US President Donald Trump. The newspaper argues that the more dangerous outcome for the Ukrainian leader would be an unexpected decision by Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire.

Berliner Zeitung considers such a scenario highly unlikely. According to the newspaper, Moscow has little reason to make concessions while Ukraine’s economy and energy system remain under severe pressure. The authors predict that both could collapse completely during the winter.

Putin previously confirmed that Kiev had stepped up its push for a ceasefire. The proposals include suspending strikes on energy infrastructure and aerial attacks, as well as lifting the blockade of Russia’s Black Sea coast.

The Russian president said Ukraine had initiated the maritime blockade and begun attacking civilian targets, prompting Moscow to respond with what he described as sensitive and destructive strikes.

Putin also said the Kiev government must recognize the futility of such provocations. He argued that escalating the situation would not produce the result Kiev seeks and that Russia’s response would force its opponents to confront the reality of the situation.
