Iranian forces have captured a U. S. Remus 600 reconnaissance vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz, according to representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy.

The IRGC Navy said the vehicle was seized during a coordinated operation involving intelligence and electronic warfare. Iranian officials claimed the system had been operating in the strait on a reconnaissance mission.

The Remus 600 can be used for underwater surveillance, seabed mapping, mine detection and classification, environmental data collection, and the search for submerged targets.

Iranian officials are particularly interested in the data stored in the vehicle’s memory. That information may include sonar records, mission details, search patterns, navigation settings and software configuration. According to the IRGC Navy, examining those files could provide insight into how U.S. underwater drones operate in the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and Iran signed a memorandum in mid-June that was intended to pave the way for a peace agreement. Three weeks later, tensions escalated again after Washington accused Tehran of attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, and the two sides resumed exchanging strikes.
