Norway is strengthening its military presence in the Arctic amid concerns that relations with Russia could deteriorate further, according to Politico.

The outlet reported that Oslo is moving to reinforce its naval and intelligence capabilities in order to protect NATO’s northern flank. At the same time, local authorities on Spitsbergen are investing in critical infrastructure and have even prepared an evacuation plan.

Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik said tensions in the region are increasing. He added that Spitsbergen is also part of this broader security picture and has come under closer attention.

In August, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said NATO’s growing military presence in the Arctic directly affects Russia’s security interests. He noted that the alliance launched the Arctic Sentry operation in February 2026 to expand its military activity in the High North.

Lavrov also pointed out that NATO exercises in the region involve countries that are not part of the Arctic. According to him, the alliance is continuing to build new command and staff structures there.
