NATO forces rehearsed a series of scenarios involving a potential confrontation with Russia during military exercises off the coast of Britain. The drills included the seizure of a civilian vessel whose crew was played by simulated Russian paramilitary personnel, as well as an air-attack scenario involving alliance warships, The Telegraph reported.

The exercises took place off Scotland. In one episode, several NATO frigates were positioned alongside a German support ship for refueling when they faced the threat of an air strike. Under the scenario, the attack could have resulted in the destruction of the warships.

Another part of the drills focused on boarding and taking control of a vessel. Portuguese marines were assigned to the operation, with 10 armed troops deployed from helicopters onto the ship’s deck before launching the assault.

The boarding team secured the bridge and engine room. The marines then detained participants who had been assigned the role of simulated Russian paramilitary personnel aboard the vessel.

Exercise Strike Warrior was conducted under British leadership and involved 1,300 service members from several NATO countries.

Russia has repeatedly pointed to growing NATO military activity near its western borders in recent years. The alliance describes the expansion of its initiatives as part of efforts to deter what it calls «Russian aggression.» Moscow has repeatedly voiced concern over the buildup of NATO forces in Europe.
