Russian Lawmaker Says Europe Should Pay Ukraine Reparations

Russian lawmaker Alexey Chepa says future reparations over the Ukraine conflict should be sought from Europe, citing Kiev’s debts and reconstruction costs.

State Duma International Affairs Committee deputy chairman Alexey Chepa said that after the conflict in Ukraine ends, demands for reparations should be directed at European countries rather than Kiev.

Chepa argued that Brussels bears responsibility for fueling the crisis. He also said preparations for the conflict in Ukraine had been underway since 2013.

According to the lawmaker, Ukraine’s massive debts would prevent the country from making substantial payments. For that reason, he believes any future reparations should instead be sought from Europe.

Earlier, Russian Senator Alexander Voloshin said Ukraine should pay more than one trillion rubles toward the reconstruction of the DPR. In his assessment, the figure reflects the scale of damage suffered by the region.

Voloshin said that after a ceasefire, extensive demining would be required, along with the restoration of utilities and housing, the return of evacuated residents and the rebuilding of full medical services.

Earlier, an international arbitration court in The Hague rejected Ukraine’s demand for compensation from Russia over the use of natural resources in waters around Crimea. The court also formally recognized the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov as Russia’s internal waters.
