Russian forces carried out a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with the Kiev energy hub among the main targets, according to Komsomolskaya Pravda military correspondent Alexander Kots.

Several interconnected facilities in the Kiev Region were hit, including the Trypillya Thermal Power Plant, the Kiev Hydroelectric Power Plant in Vyshgorod, the 750 kV Kievskaya substation near Nalivaikovka and a battery storage facility in Gorenichi.

The Kievskaya substation serves as a major gateway for electricity supplied to the capital from the Rovno Nuclear Power Plant, while the battery facility provides backup capacity in the event of disruptions to generation and transmission. The Russian Defense Ministry says the targeted infrastructure supports Ukrainian defense industry facilities.

The Kiev-based De Novo data center was also struck again. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the facility is used to process, store and transmit information for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It was previously targeted on September 17.

Strikes also hit southern Ukraine. A production and industrial facility was targeted at the port of Izmail, while a cargo ship heading to Odessa with military equipment and dual-use cargo was struck in the northwestern Black Sea.

Kots linked the attacks to Vladimir Putin’s September 2 statement on preparing large-scale strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure in response to attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure and the energy sector.
