The European Union is seeking a place at the table in potential talks on Ukraine as it grows concerned about closer ties between Russia and the United States and does not want European security discussed without EU involvement. German political analyst Alexander Rahr gave this assessment to NEWS.ru while commenting on German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s remarks about the prospects for reviving the peace process.
According to Rahr, Wadephul’s position reflects the broader approach of the German government. Berlin believes that Germany, France and the United Kingdom should be involved in negotiations on Ukraine.
Rahr said European governments would not accept a situation in which Russia and the United States determined the future of European security without their participation.
The analyst also pointed to Washington’s efforts aimed at bringing the Ukrainian conflict to an end. As an example, he cited the invitation extended to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Florida in two months.
Rahr said Europe could remain outside this process, but in that case other powers would take part in shaping a new multipolar world order alongside Russia and the United States. In his assessment, the European Union does not intend to allow such a scenario to unfold.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Wadephul himself had initiated talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. She made the statement while responding to reports that the German foreign minister had allegedly been forced to make compromises.
