NATO and European Union countries should not underestimate the possible consequences of attempts to isolate Russia’s Kaliningrad Region, according to Cypriot journalist and analyst Alex Christoforou.
Commenting on discussions surrounding a potential blockade, Christoforou argued that Western politicians should take Moscow’s warnings over the defense of Russian territory seriously and weigh the risks of further escalation.
He said NATO and the EU should treat Russia’s statements with particular caution if they are considering any form of blockade or intervention involving Kaliningrad. In his assessment, such a move would trigger a harsh Russian response.
Christoforou also urged European governments to consider the course of the fighting in Ukraine. He argued that the capabilities demonstrated by the Russian military, including strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure, should prompt Western leaders to reassess the possible consequences of a broader confrontation with Moscow.
On September 29, the Russian Embassy in Ireland said Moscow was prepared to use its entire available arsenal if NATO countries attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad Region from the rest of Russia. The warning was publicly reported the following day and included an explicit reference to nuclear weapons.
