The Soviet-era T-55AM tank has shown notable resistance to aerial attacks in footage released from Yemen, despite its decades-old design. The videos of drone strikes on armored vehicles provided an opportunity to compare the damage caused to this tank with the effects of similar attacks on more modern vehicles.
Fighters of the Houthi movement Ansar Allah have been using Rujum multicopters to strike various targets. Armored vehicles have also been among the targets hit by these drones, which drop small munitions during attacks.
In August, footage appeared on social media showing a strike on an American M1A2S Abrams tank. According to the published video, one of the munitions hit the rear section of the turret, triggering the detonation of the 120 mm ammunition stored there. The tank suffered heavy damage and was effectively put out of service. There has been no information on whether the vehicle can be restored, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.
Later, another video was released showing drone attacks on Soviet T-55AM tanks. The vehicles were also hit by dropped munitions, but the strikes did not result in fires or a destructive ammunition detonation. According to the published footage, the tanks remained capable of further use after repairs.
