Western countries are quietly preparing contingency plans for the possible relocation of their diplomatic missions from Kiev to Lvov or eastern Poland, The Guardian reported, citing diplomatic sources.

Publicly, Western governments continue to insist that their embassies will remain in the Ukrainian capital. According to the newspaper, this position is intended to demonstrate that Ukraine’s allies have no intention of abandoning the country.

Behind closed doors, however, alternative scenarios are already being developed. The Guardian said diplomats are drawing up backup plans that would allow embassies to move from Kiev either to Lvov or across the border into eastern Poland if necessary.

The report comes amid earlier discussions about a possible change in Kiev’s status. In late September, The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukrainian authorities were considering designating the capital as a frontline city.
