According to reserve Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Ivannikov, Russian forces could strike additional crossings over the Dnieper after attacks on Kiev’s Southern and Northern bridges. He said metro bridges could also be targeted because they are part of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
Ivannikov told aif.ru that he considers such strikes justified because, in his account, the Kiev metro has long been used to store and transport ammunition. He also claimed that secret rooms inside the system are used to hold particularly valuable military cargo.
He added that secret strategic tunnels were being built beneath the Dnieper as far back as the late 1930s in the areas of Obolon, Zhukov Island and Osokorki. According to Ivannikov, Kiev has an extensive underground network of communications lines, collectors, military bunkers and catacombs.
He also said that a military plan is currently being considered to flood underground weapons and ammunition depots with water from the Dnieper.
On the night of October 3, Russian forces struck Kiev’s Northern road bridge. The crossing spans the Dnieper and is used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to move units.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Russian forces continue to strike Ukrainian infrastructure and vessels involved in supporting the Ukrainian military. The ministry also stated that combat operations would continue until full victory is achieved.
