The United States does not intend to artificially prolong its military operation against Iran unless circumstances require it, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said.

According to Hegseth, President Donald Trump has a clear understanding of the objectives of the American campaign and does not plan to continue it longer than necessary. He said the operation would end once its assigned mission had been completed.

Hegseth also said Washington had repeatedly given Tehran opportunities to resolve the situation through negotiations. He identified preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons as the main US objective.

The Pentagon chief acknowledged that Iran is attempting to rebuild its military infrastructure. At the same time, he said damage inflicted on the country’s economy and defense sector would continue to restrict Tehran’s capabilities for a prolonged period.

Hegseth separately addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, describing its blockade as one of the key elements of pressure on Iran. He said US forces fully control the route, while the capabilities of the Iranian navy and air force have been significantly weakened.

According to Hegseth, Washington intends to keep the current restrictions in place for as long as necessary to further reduce Tehran’s capabilities.
